Castle of Ainay le Vieil

Castle of Ainay le Vieil
Together, we discovered the history of the Ainay-le Vieil rose garden. Did you know that? A rose could be offered as a token of submission by a vassal to his lord. The rose was a flower with many meanings in the West in the Middle Ages. A religious symbol of the blood of martyrs and the sufferings of Christ, of virginity and Marian compassion, it expressed love and fidelity in the secular world. Instances of symbolic royalties in the form of roses appear in deeds at the turn of the 12th century, then develop successfully from the 13th century onwards. The written document ratifies the feudal-vassal commitment and bears witness to the gestures exchanged. The deeds state that the rose is to be presented annually, on the feast of the nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The duration of the practice is sometimes limited to a few years, as long as one of the parties to the transaction lives. The deeds specify that the rose is given to the lord for any service. This practice is the corollary of the granting of a fief to the vassal in recognition of his homage. The rose could be given as a single flower or in the form of a crown, sometimes called a "rosary". The rose has several overlapping meanings, both as currency and as a sign. It can be an attribute of the leased land, an ephemeral symbol of its seasonality, and an invitation to renew the agreement annually. ... See moreSee less
