Castle of Ainay le Vieil

Castle of Ainay le Vieil
This 17th-century engraving by Nanteuil depicts Jean-Baptiste Colbert. In previous articles, we discovered that he was an important figure in the history of the Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil. In this engraving, he occupies the center of the composition in an oval medallion, in bust form, wearing the cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit and an openwork lace collar. He is shown in front of the Palais du Louvre, where the king housed many of the artists to whom Colbert lent his support. He held almost every government office. Let's take a look at that of Superintendent of Buildings, Arts and Manufactures. This office gave the minister responsibility for the creation and maintenance of the king's palaces and buildings. It first appeared in the reign of François I. Initially poorly organized, it became a highly structured administration thanks to Colbert. There were some 150 people working there: architects, intendants, controllers, treasurers and a historiographer. The most famous superintendents of Louis XIV's reign were Colbert, Louvois and Hardouin-Mansart. Source: French society in the 17th century, Michel Vergé-Franceschi. ... See moreSee less
