Castle of Ainay le Vieil

"Rigorously trimmed boxwood borders formed frames in which perfectly symmetrical swathes of greenery unfurled as if on a ladies' room". This sentence, taken from the novel "Captain Fracasse" by 19th-century writer Théophile Gautier, clearly shows that boxwood reigns supreme in the parks and gardens of castles, designing their hedges and labyrinths. Indeed, they can be found in the Chartreuses d'Ainay-le-Vieil. Its evergreen foliage has earned it the name "Buxus sempervirens" or "evergreen boxwood". The common box tree is the most widespread of the "Buxus" genus. It lends itself particularly well to pruning and topiary, an art practised as far back as antiquity, as Horace Walpole reports in his "Essay on the Art of Modern Gardens", where he evokes the gardens of Pliny the Elder. Boxwood is gradually becoming an essential element of French gardens. From the 17th century onwards, under the impetus of André Le Nôtre, the great gardener to King Louis XIV and creator of the gardens of Versailles, Fontainebleau, Vaux-le Vicomte and Chantilly, the "French garden" reigned supreme in all European gardens. Boxwoods are pruned into low hedges to frame lawns and flowerbeds, or to create elegant embroideries. This love of formal gardens is still one of the hallmarks of gardens in France, but unfortunately it's been eaten away by moth and fungus diseases, and despite all the treatments it's probably on the verge of extinction.
